Things to Do in Fairfield This Spring

The jacarandas aren’t out yet, but everything else has got the memo. Station Street has its doors propped open again, the footpath tables are back out along Railway Place, and the walk down to Fido and the river is finally something you’d choose to do rather than endure.

Spring is the Village at its best — no ticket required, no booking necessary. Here’s how to spend it.

Start with coffee, outside

The first properly warm morning deserves a table on the footpath.

  • Treble Cafe — 21–23 Railway Place. A family-run newcomer that landed in the Village in January and settled straight in.
  • Fifteen Pounds — 21–23 Railway Place. Classic breakfast plates, bagels and brunch, plus cold drinks and cocktails when the morning stretches on.
  • Our First Cafe — 9 Railway Place. A genuine community hub, bringing Korean flavours into the everyday coffee run.
  • Three Locals — 127 Station Street. All-day breakfast and lunch built on seasonal, locally sourced produce, with vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options and a licence for when brunch turns into something longer.
  • Harvest Foodstore — 108 Station Street. Café on one side, organic grocer on the other. Eat, then shop for dinner.

Bread, pastry and something sweet

  • Kneadful Things — 116 Station Street. Sourdough, handmade pastries and pies, with a real commitment to sustainable, locally sourced ingredients.
  • Nouha’s Bakery — 122 Station Street. Middle Eastern family recipes, going strong in Fairfield for over 12 years. Mezze, foldovers, pastries — and catering if you’re hosting.
  • Gusto Bakery — 139 Station Street. Family-owned since 2012 and a Station Street fixture for coffee, pies and cakes.
  • Pantheon Cakes — 88 Station Street. A Greek cake shop making fine pastries and custom event cakes to order.
  • Nikos Fairfield — 254–262 Wingrove Street. Sweetening Melbourne since 1987.

And when it’s warm enough to eat walking: Gelato Papa (72A Station Street) for handmade Italian gelato, Crave Street Dessert Bar (141A Station Street) for crepes, and Poplab Popcorn (87b Station Street) for gourmet popcorn by the bag.

Flowers on the way home

Spring is the one season where a bunch of flowers is barely an indulgence.

  • Fig & Bloom — 274 Wingrove Street. Fresh seasonal blooms sourced from local growers, arranged for everything from a Tuesday to a wedding.
  • Peachy Green Garden Architects — 32 Railway Place. If spring has you looking at your own backyard with ambition, they design and build outdoor spaces from consultation right through to construction.

The new-season wardrobe reset

  • 5 Elements Boutique — 117 Station Street. M.A. Dainty, Once Was and Elm Lifestyle, with a personalised approach to getting you into the right thing.
  • MODA In Fashion — 118 Station Street. Streetwear, workwear and occasionwear, stocking Caroline Morgan, Tirelli, Vivid and Jump.
  • Frank Rocca Menswear — 90 Station Street. Dressing Fairfield men since 1965, with expert tailoring and European cuts.
  • Shoe Image — 144 Station Street. Birkenstock, Dr Martens, El Naturalista and Naot, for the whole family.
  • Dreamweaver Linen — 104 Station Street. Time to swap the winter bedding for something lighter.

School holidays in the Village

Victorian school holidays run Saturday 19 September to Sunday 4 October, with Term 4 back on Monday 5 October — and there’s plenty to fill them with right here.

  • Fairyfields — 80 Station Street. A Station Street institution for 30 years, stocking whimsical gifts and supporting local designers.
  • Fox In Sox Kids — 121 Station Street. Clothing, footwear and toys for babies and kids.
  • Fairfield Books — picture books, junior stories and plenty for the grown-ups too.

We’ve put together a full holiday guide too — see Fairfield Village Spring School Holidays.

Long lunches and picnic supplies

Grand Final Friday falls on 25 September this year, with the Grand Final itself on Saturday 26 September — a long weekend that’s practically designed for a slow lunch.

  • Da Pasquale — 93 Station Street. Wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta, relaxed and affordable.
  • Flour + Salt — 72 Station Street. Italian-inspired, wood-fired, Mediterranean ingredients.
  • Rooster Bar — 128 Station Street. Charcoal chicken and chips, open seven days.

Packing a picnic for the river instead? Biviano & Sons (98 Station Street) have been the Village greengrocer since 1968, and Station Street IGA & Liquor (140–142 Station Street) handles everything else. For the drinks: Rocket Wine at 28 Railway Place, or Oak & Young at 107 Station Street, where a refillable bottle program runs 20 small-batch wines on tap. And while you’re here

Stretch it out at Yoga Spot Fairfield (70 Station Street), or step into Fragments Gallery (119A Station Street) to see sculptor George Giannis’s work up close. Still going? The Faces of the Village self-guided photography trail is a good excuse to walk the whole precinct properly.

Before you go

Trading hours vary between businesses, and especially on Sundays and public holidays — including Grand Final Friday. It’s always worth a quick call before you make the trip. Spring suits this place. Come and spend an afternoon in it — and see who else is waiting for you in the Fairfield Village business directory.
