Fragments Gallery serves as a dedicated showcase for the classical and contemporary sculptures of George Giannis, a Melbourne/Naarm-based artist renowned for his skill as both a sculptor and an art restorer. A Diverse Collection of Artistic Expressions:
Growing up in North Carlton after his family’s relocation from Greece to Melbourne, Giannis developed an early connection to art and culture. This background instilled in him a profound respect for history and craftsmanship, which would later become defining elements of his artistic practice. His extensive career includes decades of restoring invaluable artworks and historical buildings, as well as undertaking a diverse range of commissioned projects, reflecting his versatility and expertise.
A pivotal moment in Giannis’ artistic development occurred during his studies in Florence in the mid-1990s, where he discovered the transformative power of sculpture. This revelation led him on a determined path to master the art of working in marble. After persistent effort, he secured an apprenticeship with a master sculptor in Carrara, Italy. Thus, immersing himself in the heart of the sculpting world.
For four formative years, Giannis studied under Giovanni Bedini in Pietrasanta, the renowned spiritual home for sculptors drawn from all corners of the globe. This immersive experience provided him with invaluable knowledge and skills, solidifying his commitment to the art of sculpture.

Throughout his life, Giannis’ profound love for classical Greek and Roman art has served as a constant source of joy and inspiration.
